The Benefits
Diving Membership of Liverpool University Sub-Aqua Club entitles you to:
- use of the University pool on Wednesday and Friday evenings for diving training, swimming and octopush.
- access to LUSAC dive trips and social events. Dive trips are run at cost (usually travel and accommodation).
- use of Club kit and diving from Club boats. LUSAC can supply your cylinders, BCD, regulator, weightbelt and (assuming you're not an outrageous size) drysuit. You need to provide your own mask, fins and snorkel.
- training appropriate to your current diving skills and experience. Courses are run at cost by volunteer instructors.
- all the air you can breathe from LUSAC compressors. Keen divers recover the cost of their subs in free air alone. And soon we will offer nitrox to qualified members for the cost of the oxygen.
Octopush Membership entitles you to:
- use of the University pool on Wednesday and Friday evenings for swimming and octopush.
- access to LUSAC social events.
You can only join LUSAC through Club Liverpool. All Diving Members are also members of the British Sub-Aqua Club.
Because LUSAC is partially funded by the University, members must usually be current or former students or staff. If you are interested in joining and have some other connection with the University please contact the Secretary who can advise.
The Costs
Subscriptions are due annually at the beginning of October.
Diving Membership
Diving Membership is made up of three components: LUSAC Membership, BSAC Membership and the Diving Levy.
LUSAC Membership
- Current student or staff: £25
- Former student or staff or other: £40
If you are already a member of Club Liverpool then LUSAC Membership is only £15. Once you have joined LUSAC you can join any other Club Liverpool club for £15. LUSAC subscriptions are paid though Club Liverpool at The Base in the Guild of Students.
BSAC Membership
- student member: £19
- non-student member: £47
There are other subscriptions for some higher diving grades and instructors. Full details here. BSAC subscriptions are collected by the Membership Secretary or can be collected by BSAC by Direct Debit.
Diving Levy
The Diving Levy contributes to the upkeep of LUSAC boats, compressors and diving kit. It is collected by the Membership Secretary.
- student qualified diver: £30
- student or non-student Ocean Diver trainee: £40
- non-student qualified diver: £35
Octopush Membership
- Current student or staff: £25
- Former student or staff or other: £40
If you are already a member of Club Liverpool then LUSAC Octopush Membership is only £15. Once you have joined LUSAC you can join any other Club Liverpool club for £15. LUSAC Octopush Membership is paid though Club Liverpool at The Base in the Guild of Students.
Already a member of another BSAC branch or BSAC Direct?
If you are already a member of another BSAC branch or a member of BSAC Direct / General Branch you do not need to join BSAC again. Simply provide your BSAC membership number when you join. You can continue to pay your BSAC subs through your other branch, or you can make LUSAC your primary branch. BSAC Direct membership is more expensive than membership through an ordinary branch so Direct members are likely to want to make LUSAC their primary branch when they next renew.
Why is it so expensive?
Diving is not a cheap sport, but university diving clubs are by far the cheapest way to dive. Joining LUSAC for a year is cheaper than doing an Open Water Diver course (involving only 4 open water dives) with a commercial PADI centre, and offers diving, trips and social events throughout the year. Of course joining is only worthwhile if you are going to train or dive with us.
Why is it so complex?
All Club Liverpool clubs receive a proportion of their members' Club Liverpool subscriptions (currently £15) and a grant funded centrally by the University. Club Liverpool membership is a good deal for LUSAC. However Club Liverpool is not set up to deal with differing types of membership. It would not be fair to charge Octopush Members (who do not use the boats, diving kit or compressors) the same subscription as Diving Members, hence the Diving Levy. Ocean Diver trainees pay a higher Diving Levy because they make additional use of Club equipment for pool and open water training. Club Liverpool require that their subscriptions are paid via The Base, but are unable to collect other monies from individual members. The Diving Levy and BSAC subscriptions are therefore collected by the Membership Secretary.
