Octopush

Octopush is a form of underwater hockey which was developed to encourage snorkel and diving fitness for divers. However it has now developed into a sport in its own right and the club participates keenly and competitively with other clubs.

The game is played with 6 Octopush players on each site. A lead weight called a squid is pushed along the bottom of the pool using a small bat whilst the players hold their breath. A goal is scored when the squid is pushed into one of the metal trays at each end of the pool. During the game the teams will swap ends so that each side would both defend and attack the deep and the shallow end goals.

Octopush is a strenuous, physically demanding game but should be a no-contact sport. Nevertheless players are advised to wear a padded glove holding the bat to protect the knuckles against accidental blows. In addition most players wear ear-defenders to protect the eardrum against accidental contact.

Octopush is fun to play and it definitely a participant sport rather than a spectator sport. Club members at all levels are encouraged to come and learn to play. You will keep fit, have fun and get to know the other members of the club very quickly.

LUSAC plays Octopush in the University pool on Wednesday and Friday evenings during term time. All members are welcome to come and have a go.
