LUSAC is a branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club and therefore teaches BSAC courses and awards BSAC qualifications, which are recognised throughout the world. Beginners who train with us will start working towards their Ocean Diver qualification.
You will start in the swimming pool in the University Sport and Fitness Centre. There you will learn the skills which will keep you safe in the water throughout your diving career including breathing underwater with a SCUBA set, clearing a flooded mask and assisting a diver in difficulty. Pool training takes place in groups of up to four students with an instructor and your group will meet on either a Wednesday or a Friday evening.
Learning to dive does take effort and commitment and it is important that you attend pool lessons (and turn up on time!) to avoid being left behind or holding up the entire group. If for any reason (eg illness) you can not attend a pool lesson please let your instructor know.
The Club will provide all the kit you need for pool lessons except your mask, fins and snorkle.
The Ocean Diver course also includes a number of theory lessons and a theory assessment, which this year will take place on Sunday 11 October in the Duncan Building.
Once you have completed your pool and theory lessons you will need to learn how to use a drysuit and then you will be ready to dive in open water with an instructor.
Open Water lessons take place at safe open water locations, both inland and at sea and consist of five dives with a minimum of 120 minutes underwater. You will consolidate on the skills gained in the pool and gain experience in a variety of conditions.
Once qualified as an Ocean Diver you will be able to dive with another Ocean Diver (or higher grade), with the supervision of a Dive Manager to a depth of 20m. You will then be ready to begin the Sports Diver course.
